Computational Issues in E-Commerce
and the E-World

This graduate seminar will study current research on computational issues
in e-commerce and the e-world. Students will read and analyze a selection
of papers reporting results of recent research. Topics covered will be
the computer and information science aspects of web anaylsis and indexing;
web search and crawling; recommender systems and colloborative filtering;
digital libraries, web databases, e-auctions, privacy and security, video
information retrieval, etc. Students will read and analyze recent recent
papers reporting results of recent reseach.

Grades will be determined by the following:

at least one, 35 - 40 minute presentation based on paper(s) from the research
literature given in the reading list. Each presentation should be a summary
and critique of the paper and topic. The presentation should give a brief
introduction and overview of the area, discuss the issues presented
in the paper, and bring up new research directions that are not addressed.
Most of the presentation will to cover the papers assigned. The
presentation should be in some eformat, such as powerpoint, and should
be emailed to the instructor before the presentation.

Students choose a presentation topic and paper from the reading list*.
Every
registered student must give a presentation or part of one.

Presentation dates will be decided by September 4. Presentation dates cannot
be changed and must be presented on the agreed date(s), as in a conference.
Please give a presentation date preference.

Students
must have a presentation date set on the student
presentation timetable and give part of that presentation to receive
a grade!

summaries of the "assigned topic" reading material, NOT TO EXCEED ONE PAGE
IN LENGTH. Summaries should have at least 3 questions relating issues raised
by the paper.

Summaries are due the day before each presentation and should be sent to
giles@ist.psu.edu;
late summaries will not be accepted. The name of the student should
be in the text of the summary; the email subject should be: CSE 579I Summary.
