Experiential Programs

IST students can take advantage of out-of-class experiences throughout the year to enhance their education, build their professional network, and explore career opportunities. Most costs for travel, registration, and lodging are covered, so students do not incur any costs to participate.

Grace Hopper Celebration for Women in Computing

Each year, the College of IST supports a group of students to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration for Women in Computing. The four-day conference, billed as the largest gathering of women technologists in the world, welcomes more than 25,000 individuals and 400 companies for presentations, networking sessions, and professional development opportunities. Applications open in February, and students are notified of their status by the end of the spring semester. Selected students receive funds for travel, housing, and conference registration, thanks to generous support from corporate sponsors and the College of IST. Students also attend a series of professional development workshops led by IST staff in the fall prior to the conference and prepare reflection materials to share with the college upon their return.

ACM Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing

Held in September, the Tapia Conference brings together students, faculty, researchers, and professionals from all backgrounds to celebrate diversity in the computing industry, create community, share professional advice, and inspire through common experiences. Each year, the College of IST sends a group of students to the conference to attend presentations, network with professionals, and explore internship and career opportunities.

Complete and submit the application by the deadline. Selected students receive funds for travel, housing, and conference registration, thanks to generous support from the College of IST and conference scholarships. Students are required to attend a series of professional development workshops led by IST staff prior to the conference and participate in a student panel to discuss their experience with the IST community upon their return.
