Student Views on Internships

“When I accepted an internship position with Del Monte Foods I had no idea what to expect. However, looking back on my experience now, I can truly say that it was one of the best decisions of my life. Not only did Del Monte give me great insight as to how the corporate world worked, they gave me real projects with real deadlines to work on. In addition, I know the corporate network that I began building this summer while I was at Del Monte will benefit me tremendously as I pursue my career. I cannot thank Del Monte enough for giving me the opportunity to intern with them.” — Jim Heuler, IST internship: Del Monte Foods

“I interned for the Department of Health Policy and Administration in the College of Health and Human Development at Penn State University. I was the assistant PC support person to the regular PC support person. I shadowed him for the first couple of weeks until I found my way around. After that, I plunged right into whatever the faculty and staff needed as far as computing needs. I found myself getting more comfortable with those I worked with/for as time went on and actually felt a sense of belonging. I was able to use some of the knowledge gained in my IST classes to figure out glitches and repair them. My knowledge of how computer networks and software and hardware interact enabled me to keep right up with the demands.” — Mike Hamel, IST internship: The Pennsylvania State University, College of Health and Human Development

“This internship has been one of the best experiences in my life. I really believe that the experience I am receiving from this position will make me a better member of the workforce. I plan on doing a total of 3 internships, fully taking advantage of the program that Penn State offers." — Lonnie Cohn, IST internship: Community Distributors

“My internship was closely related to my studies in SRA at Penn State. The focus I had when choosing SRA was to work with analyzing the security policies and procedures of a company, which is exactly what I did with my clients at Ernst & Young. Based on my internship experience I know that I will enjoy working in this field coming out of college.” — Ryan Ward, SRA Internship: Ernst & Young

“My internship allowed me to see first hand what life will be like after graduating from Penn State and joining the work force. I was placed as a team member on large-scale, demanding projects that allowed me to develop as both and intern and a future full time employee. When it is time to start work after graduation, I won’t feel uneasy about moving to a new place and beginning a new job - I already know what the transition will be like.” — Jason Conrad, IST internship
